Steeplechase 101

Nashville’s official unofficial kick-off to summer is Saturday! Steeplechase, one of my favorite events in the city, is just a few short days away. The Iroquois Steeplechase is Nashville’s version of the Kentucky Derby. That’s the easiest way to explain it. This is the 77th year and only my 2nd time going. After last year, I plan to make it an annual tradition. It’s a full day of exciting racing, people watching, good food and tailgating It’s more affectionately known to past attendees as steeplewaste.

Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for Steeplechase.

Outfit
Just like the Kentucky derby there is the horse race and then the parade of outfits. A hat or fascinator is essential. Most women opt for short dresses and sandals. Small purse Thankfully, last year we had wonderful dry weather, but if it’s rains, rain boots are a must. It’s held at Percy Warner Park each year and it’s just a dirt and grass field surrounding the track. I would bring a rain jacket just in case.

It’s Nashville in May so don’t wear a fabric that is too heavy and will make you sweat. You will be outside from 9-5.
