My Spotify Premium account is some of the best money I spend each month. I love Spotify for introducing me to new artists. This week, it was Dermot Kennedy and I’m absolutely obsessed with his raw and real voice. “A closeness” from his latest EP came on my Discover Weekly playlist and immediately caught my ear and tugged on my heart strings.
He has close to 50 million streams on Spotify and I’m sure a large chunk are from me playing his latest single, “Boston” on repeat. That’s 50 million streams without a full album! Since I’ve worn out my unlimited Spotify plays, I’m anxiously awaiting a full album so I can purchase it.
“So keeping bright eyes focused on the coastline waiting for you.
Don’t give me that bye-bye baby when the night moves into black from the blue
The nights you’ve been through
Just give me that wide smile made for putting songs into the hearts of the doomed
And catch a cold heart staring at the water, babe, remember you flew.”
The young Dublin folk singer-songwriter has been on tour with James Vincent McMorrow and is making a splash by writing with some top contenders in the industry. “Glory” is quickly becoming his breakout hit as it strays from his normal sound. It’s a powerful ballad that will hit you hard and move you. Watch it here. Give him a listen and let me know what you think in the comments below.
He’s currently on a sold out tour overseas, but has a few US shows coming up. Unfortunately, he is not coming to Nashville anytime soon (hey-Dermot if you see this I want tickets!). Hopefully, he is coming to your town. See his latest tour dates at http://www.dermotkennedymusic.com/live/.
